Medicare Plans Explained

A clear, transparent look at what each plan type covers, allowing you to build a secure foundation for your healthcare needs.

Plan A (Hospital)

The fundamental baseline for inpatient care. Covers hospital stays, skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and specific home health services.

Plan B (Medical)

Essential medical insurance. Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, vital medical supplies, and proactive preventive services.

Plan C (Advantage)

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. Bundles hospital, medical, and often prescription drug coverage into a single managed plan.

Plan D (Prescriptions)

Standalone coverage designed specifically for prescription medications, including common recommended vaccines and shots.

Medigap (Supplement)

Fills the financial 'gaps' left by Original Medicare, absorbing unpredictable costs like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

SNPs

Specialized plans providing tailored benefits, specific provider choices, and focused drug formularies for distinct groups.

Plan What It Covers Who It's Best For
Part A Inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care. Everyone enrolling in Medicare; fundamental baseline coverage.

Medicare Deadlines

When Can You Enroll?

Navigating Medicare means knowing your dates. Missing a window can result in lifelong penalties or delayed coverage. We break down the critical periods so you can plan your financial future with confidence.

Initial Enrollment (IEP)

Around Your 65th Birthday

A 7-month window starting 3 months before your birth month. Your first and most critical opportunity to enroll without penalties.

Annual Enrollment Period

Oct 15 – Dec 7

The annual window to join, switch, or drop Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug plans for the upcoming year.

Advantage Open Enrollment

Jan 1 – Mar 31

If you already have a Medicare Advantage plan, you can make one change or return to Original Medicare during this period.

Open Enrollment Period (GEP)

Jan 1 – Mar 31

If you missed your Initial Enrollment Period, you can sign up for Part A and/or Part B, though late penalties may apply.

Special Enrollment (SEP)

Varies by Life Event

Triggered by circumstances like moving, retiring, or losing employer coverage, allowing you to enroll outside standard windows.

Medicare FAQs

Clear, compliant answers to the most common questions regarding your Medicare coverage options, timelines, and penalties.

What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medigap?

Medicare Advantage (Part C) replaces your Original Medicare with a private plan, often including drug coverage and extra benefits, usually with network restrictions. Medigap (Medicare Supplement) works alongside Original Medicare to pay for out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and copayments, allowing you to see any doctor who accepts Medicare.

How do I avoid late enrollment penalties?

To avoid penalties, you must enroll in Medicare Part B and Part D during your Initial Enrollment Period, which begins three months before your 65th birthday month and ends three months after. If you have creditable coverage through an employer, you may delay enrollment without penalty.

When can I change my Medicare plan?

You can make changes to your Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. Some individuals may qualify for Special Enrollment Periods based on life events, such as moving or losing other coverage.

Are my prescription drugs covered?

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover most outpatient prescription drugs. You must enroll in a standalone Medicare Part D plan or choose a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage (MAPD). We recommend reviewing your specific medications annually to ensure your plan's formulary still meets your needs.
